The multitude of face configurations on wire-wrap bits is the
result of a number of special application designs, and most are out
of date or not recommended for general construction applications. The
desired effect is to have the face push the wire while the wrap is
being made, rather than to rely on the friction of the wire in the
bit channel. For 30 gauge wire, the type 3 "counterbore" bit face is
proper, and for 26 gauge the type 6 "horseshoe" bit face is right.
The proper wire wrap bit and sleeve for 30 gauge wire is
#507063 and #507100 for 25 mil pins, except for the cut-off tip,
which is a special unit not shown in the catalog (p.n. 511344 and
511376 for the bit and sleeve). This has the counter-bore face.
For 26 gauge wire the horseshoe face is recommended, and the
proper bit for the H800 connector block pins is #26263 with the
#18840 sleeve. For wrapping 26 gauge wire on 25 mil pins, #506445
and #507100 bit and sleeve are required.
For no discernable reason, we use the left-handed wrapping
guns, despite the fact that the industry standard is right-hand. This
sometimes causes long lead times, as the left-handed versions are
generally not on the shelf. There is no reason to remain backwards
if we are buying additional wire-wrap guns, and I recommend that we
change.
There are some tips which are not recommended for copper or
tinned copper wire: Bit #504221 is only for alloy wire, and causes
undesirable stretching if used with copper wire. There is no mention
in the catalog of this particular gem of knowledge.
There is a special frob called the "backforce nose" that
would be a nice feature in that it applies the proper force to assure
that the wrap is not too loose or over-wrapped. The only hangup is
that it requires a special spring for the particular gauge being
used, and therefore a 30 gauge gun cannot be used with 26 gauge wire.
The salesman that is most helpful is Dan Neilson. For parts
and general info, J.L. (Jerry) Thomas in the South San Francisco
office is the person to talk with. The phone number is (75)761-0303.
